Smiles and Frowns Playhouse is excited to announce auditions for our upcoming production of Sherlock Holmes and the First Baker Street Irregular!

- Wednesday, January 29, 2025 | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Audition Location: Ayden Community Theatre (4354 Lee St, Ayden, NC 28513)
We’re looking for talented, school-aged children (grades K-12) to join our cast and bring this thrilling adventure to life! Sign your young actor up for a 15-minute audition on either day using the forms below. Callbacks for some roles may be Thursday January 30. See our FAQ page for how auditions work and what to expect. Sides (pages of the script) are available for viewing to practice ahead of time.

Production Information
Rehearsals will run from Monday February 10 until the shows dates on April 11 and 12. A draft calendar is provided here to give you an idea of the developing rehearsal schedule. Please use this information to inform us about any potential conflicts as you fill out the audition application. Note: this calendar is not final; a more complete version with scene/actor breakdown will be provided after casting is complete.

List of Characters
SHERLOCK HOLMES: A brilliant detective.
DR. WATSON: Sherlock’s kindhearted assistant.
MRS. HUDSON: The tough landlady of 221B Baker Street.
LESTRADE: The pompous inspector from Scotland Yard.
WIGGINS: 14, street-smart, tough leader of the Irregulars.
TOBY: 14, a challenger, new to the Irregulars, Anna’s brother.
ANNA: 12, the smartest Irregular, has crutches, Toby’s sister.
GEORGE: 15, the biggest Irregular, but gentle.
LUCY: 10, a fearless, impulsive and small Irregular.
OLIVER: 8, the youngest and smallest Irregular.
JEFFERSON HOPE: A desperate criminal looking for a ring. (Disguise: Mrs. Sawyer)
CONSTABLE PETERSON: A policeman.
CONSTABLE RANCE: A policeman.
JABEZ WILSON: A pawnbroker with flaming red hair.
VINCENT SPAULDING: The pawnbroker’s new assistant (later revealed as JOAN CLAY)
MARY: 14, helps clean Wilson’s home.
DUNCAN ROSS: Trustee of the League of Red-Headed Gentlemen. (later revealed as
ARCHIE UNDERWOOD)
MERRYWEATHER: A bank official.
LANDLADY: A landlady at the offices of the League of Red-Headed Gentlemen.
HENRY BAKER: A tall man who lost his hat and goose.
JOHN HORNER: A plummer at the Cosmopolitan Hotel.
JAMES RYDER: Senior attendant at the Cosmopolitan Hotel.
CATHERINE WINDIGATE: Maid of the countess and pregnant wife of Ryder.
BRECKINRIDGE: A poultry dealer who owns the geese stand.
MRS. OAKSHOTT: Ryder’s sister who owns a flock of geese.
TOUGHS: A gang of rough street youths.
TOWNSPEOPLE: A mix of high class and working class people of London. They will display clues throughout the show.
